Philip Rose, PhD, CEO
Philip L. Rose is chief executive officer of XG Sciences. Mr. Rose joined XG Sciences, Inc. in 2014 after serving as president of Sigma-Aldrich, SAFC Hitech in St. Louis, where he also held concurrent positions as chairman and chief executive officer of Sigma-Aldrich’s joint venture with Korea-based Soulbrain. Prior to that, he excelled in a number of senior business development and marketing positions in the United States and Asia for Rohm and Haas and Shipley. A graduate of Duke University (Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry) and the University of Southern California (B.S. in Chemistry), Mr. Rose has also completed the Wharton Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
Scott Murray, VP Operations
Mr. Murray has over 30 years of experience as a senior operations executive. As founder and CEO of Uretech International Inc., a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and urethane products for the automotive, medical and furniture industries, he directed all activities of the company. Mr. Murray held upper management positions at Motor Wheel Corporation and McKechnie Automotive. He earned his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Tech University, and is a registered Professional Engineer; he also holds a Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
Rob Privette, VP Energy Markets
Mr. Privette is a technical business executive with more than 25 years of experience in technology development and commercialization related to fuel cells, batteries, and other energy related devices. He brings valuable experience managing large, complex programs with the U.S. Department of Energy, DARPA, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. Prior to his role at XG Sciences, he held management positions at Ovonic Fuel Cell Company, Umicore and Babcock & Wilcox. Mr. Privette received his MS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and is a registered Professional Engineer.
Dr. Wang is an experienced leader in the development of advanced batteries and capacitors. Before joining XG Sciences, Dr. Wang was the Principal Scientific Director at CIC Energigune in Spain, where he led its new energy research center. His experience also includes: Director of Emerging Technologies at A123 Systems leading Li-ion battery cathode development; R&D Director at Pacific Industrial Development Corp for the development of nano materials for catalysis; VP at T/J Technologies for battery research; and IMRA America as an energy researcher. Dr. Wang earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Metallurgy from Beijing University of Science and Technology in China, and a Master’s and a PhD degree in Materials Science from the University of Michigan.
Hiroyuki Fukushima, PhD, Technical Director – Inks, Coatings and Composite Products
Dr. Fukushima is a founding share holder of the Company. Dr. Fukushima’s PhD research led to the development of xGnP® Graphene Nanoplatelets for composite and battery applications. His expertise was instrumental in designing xGnP® composites, which showed better properties than existing composite products. This research led to two filed patents and six applied patents. He earned his PhD in Materials Science from Michigan State University. Before earning his PhD, Dr. Fukushima received his BS and MS in Polymer Science from Osaka University in Japan. He brings additional project management experience with carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphite oxides, and nanoclays to XG Sciences.
Lawrence T. Drzal, PhD, Chief Scientist
Dr. Lawrence T. Drzal, co-founder of XG Sciences, Inc., is a University Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and Director of the Composite Materials and Structures Center at Michigan State University. He earned his PhD at Case Western Reserve University, after serving as a military and civilian researcher at the U.S.A.F. Materials Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB. His research focuses on discovering the fundamental physical and chemical interactions that take place between polymers and the surfaces of materials in composite materials, nanocomposites, and adhesive bonds. Dr. Drzal’s current research explores the functionalization and dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets in polymers and composite materials, and their nano-structuring for composite multifunctionality and enhanced energy generation and storage applications. Professor Drzal has published more than 350 peer reviewed research papers, and has been awarded 31 patents.
Corinne Lyon, CPA, Controller
Ms. Lyon is a financial professional with an extensive background in all areas of accounting and finance. Her experience started at one of the Big Four accounting firms, Ernst & Young, and then developed into a career path focused on management level accounting, finance, and administration for privately held companies. She has worked in diverse industries including construction, financial services, and now manufacturing. As the controller for XG, Ms. Lyon helps manage and set policy for the company’s accounting, HR, and other business functions. Her past experiences bring strength and ideas to XG as the company evolves into the leading provider of graphene nanotechnology.
